This report examines the landscape of K-12 STEM education by considering different school models, highlighting research on effective STEM education practices, and identifying some conditions that promote and limit school- and student-level success in STEM. It outlines what schools can do to provide all students with access to high-quality STEM education. Focusing on the science and mathematics, it also identifies effective STEM schools and practices.

President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) Releases New Report on STEM Education
Prepare and Inspire:  K-12 Education in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) for America’s Future includes two noteworthy recommendations:  Recruit and train 100,000 STEM teachers over the next decade,  and recognize and reward the top 5% of the Nation’s STEM teachers by creating a STEM master teacher corps.  PCAST consists of 20 of the Nation’s leading scientists and engineers.

Reports from the National Academies
Rising Above the Gathering Storm:  Energizing and Employing America for a Brighter Economic Future (2007) made four recommendations to create high-quality jobs and focus new science and technology efforts on meeting the nation’s needs.  One was to increase America’s talent pool by vastly improving K–12 science and mathematics education.  

Rising Above the Gathering Storm, Revisited (2010) provides a snapshot of the work of the government and the private sector in the past five years, analyzing how the original recommendations have or have not been acted upon, what consequences this may have on future competitiveness, and priorities going forward.
